    Description: 
    A dormant volcanic crater that has been reshaped and adapted to be a natural celestial observatory. It includes scenic walkways and underground viewing chambers penetrated by light from the sun, moon, and stars.

    Remarks: 
    Funded with a National Endowment for the Arts, Art in Public Places grant of $50,000 given in 1975 to the Dia Center for the Arts and in 1983 to the Skystone Foundation. The sculpture project was also financed in part with a Guggenheim Foundation grant. The land was purchased from a private ranch, and the Skystone Foundation was formed to raise funds from corporate and private donors. At the time of the SOS! survey, Roden Crater was a work in progress. IAS files contain an article from the Phoenix Gazette, May 9, 1993, pg. G1, G4.
