Two identical griffins sit on their haunches with their wings raised. They have beard-like manes and their mouths are open, as if roaring.

Formerly located Bates Hotel, Washington & Illinois, Indianapolis, Indiana

The griffins were originally located at the Bates Hotel in downtown Indianapolis. They were installed on a porte-cochere believed to have been added after 1885. When the hotel was demolished in 1902, the griffins and the porte-cochere were purchased by the owners of Forest Home. The Forest Home area is part of the Old Northside Historic District. At the time of the 1994 SOS! survey, the griffins were being restored.
