    Portrait of a young Mary Liston Kirksey seated with her body turned slightly to the right and her gaze directed toward the viewer. She wears a loose white gown and a coral beaded necklace, and her blond hair is cut short with soft curls falling over her ears. In her left hand she holds a small Japanese doll and in her right hand she holds up a gold tipped cane which belonged to her father.

    Remarks: 
    Mary Liston Kirksey was the daughter of Margaretta Lucretia Liston and Forster Mark Kirksey of "Kirkwood," Eutaw, Greene County, Alabama. She was born April 17, 1865 and died April 2, 1867. She is buried in Mesopotamia Cemetery, Eutaw, Alabama. This portrait is possibly a posthumous portrait. A New Orleans artist's supply label, partially written in French, is on the reverse of the painting, but is now covered by conservation paper. The painting is framed in the original silver gilt frame measuring 24 x 30 in.
