    Remarks:
The Commercial Club requested funds from the State of Missouri to erect a statue of Mark Twain. The State approved the funding in 1911 but delays and indecision in Hannibal about where to place the statue caused funding to become exhausted. Late in 1913, the legislature made $10,000 available for the statue and it was placed at its present location in Riverview Park. The figure was restored in 1987 through the efforts of the Mark Twain Home Foundation. Height of figure prevented SOS! surveyor from obtaining detailed measurement. IAS files contain an excerpt from J. Hurly Hagood's "Hannibal, Mark Twain's Town."
