Formerly located Findlay Place, Summit, Cherry & St. Clair Streets, Toledo, Ohio 1887-1920.
    Remarks:
See IAS files for related newspaper clippings from The Blade (Toledo, Ohio), the Toldeo News Bee (April 27, 1931), and Ohio Magazine (April 1985, pg. 9). On Jan. 18, 1886, city legislators resolved to grant the use of land commonly called "St. Clair Place" for a statue of Steedman to be erected by William J. Finlay (founder of the Finlay Brewing Company) by Jan. 1888. The original cost of the sculpture was estimated at $25,000 to $30,000. In 1920, the statue was relocated to its new location at the head of Summit street in Riverside Park. Born in Pennsylvania, Steedman (1817-1883), came to northwestern Ohio as a canal-builder and settled in Toledo. In 1861, he left for California, but later returned to form the 14th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In 1869, he returned to Toledo, a hero because of his exploits at Chickamauga, Nashville and other engagements. He entered local politics, edited a newspaper and served for five months as Toledo's Chief of Police.
