G.A.R./1889 (On sculpture's base, below figure's proper left foot :) J.W. Fiske/21-39 Barclay St./New York (address partially illegible) unsigned Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    A figure of a soldier dressed in uniform, with overcoat, cap, and a cape covering his proper right shoulder. He stands at parade rest, with his proper left foot foot forward and arms poised to hold a rifle (now missing). His proper right hand has also broken off. The sculpture is painted brown.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was erected by the Buckingham Post No. 12, Dept. of Connecticut, G.A.R. and dedicated on Memorial Day, 1889. The monument is the centerpiece of a burial area for the graves of 32 Civil War soldiers. IAS files contain copy of 28th Anniversary Roster of Buckingham Post No. 12, Dept. of Conn., G.A.R. and Buckingham Auxiliary to the Post, Norwalk (CT), Feb. 25, 1908.
