The soldier figure was a gift of Mr. & Mrs. Woodbury K. Dana, on condition that the City of Westbrook and the Association covered the costs of the foundation and base. The statue cost $2,500 and the base work totalled $2,854, of which the City paid $500 and the remainder was raised through public subscription. Local contractor Charles Ames did the construction work. The monument was cleaned prior to Memorial Day 1995 by Richardson Monuments of South Portland, Maine.
