Remarks:
Erected by the Westbrook Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument Association in conjunction with the Cloudman Relief Corps No. 18, the Women's Auxiliary to the Grand Army of the Republic. The soldier figure was a gift of Mr. & Mrs. Woodbury K. Dana, on condition that the City of Westbrook and the Association covered the costs of the foundation and base. The statue cost $2,500 and the base work totalled $2,854, of which the City paid $500 and the remainder was raised through public subscription. Local contractor Charles Ames did the construction work. The monument was cleaned prior to Memorial Day 1995 by Richardson Monuments of South Portland, Maine. IAS files include excerpts from the books "Highlights of Westbrook History," compiled by Ernest R. Rowe et al., Westbrook Women's Club, 1952 and "Civil War Memorials Erected in the State of Maine," compiled by Maurice J. Warner, Maine Civil War Centennial Commission. IAS files also include related items from the vertical file of the Westbrook Library.
