This portrait is not found in Lawrence Park's "Gilbert Stuart, an Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works" (New York: W.E. Rudge, 1926).Samuel Meeker was a successful Philadelphia merchant involving in shipping, banking and insurance. IAP files contain a copy the Philadelphia Gazette (Oct. 28, 1797) advertisement Meeker, Denman & Co. Dry Goods and Hard Ware (20 South Front Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania). Samuel Meeker was in business with his first cousin William Parson Meeker (also painted by Gilbert Stuart, listed in the Lawrence Park's catalog of Gilbert Stuart's works), and Samuel Denman. Samuel Denman's wife Anna Maria Hampton Denman was the sister of Samuel Meeker's wife Jane. Samuel Meeker was instrumental in the development of the charter of the Philadelphia National Bank. The first loan made by the Philadelphia National Bank, on Sept. 14, 1803, was to Samuel Meeker, endorsed by his firm, Meeker, Denman & Co.
