The sculpture is based on a photo taken by Ed Spooner on a pathfinding tour to Pacific coast in 1913 with Carl G. Fisher, "The Father of the Lincoln Highway." The image was named "The Spirit of the Lincoln Way," and thousands were circulated. Helen Woodruff Smith later commissioned sculptor Ulric Dunbar to create a statue from the photograph to be used as a trophy for the 1915 transcontinental race. The race would take forty days and would follow the Lincoln Highway to Chicago, and then go south to Kansas City, and then to proceed to San Francisco over the old Santa Fe route. The winner received this bronze trophy.
