Description:
A male soldier standing in a contrapposto position. He holds a rifle in his proper left hand, his proper right hand rests on his belt at waist level. The soldier is dressed in a shirt with the sleeves rolled up over his elbows, knee breeches, leggings, and boots. The sculpture stands atop a granite base with bronze plaques on the front and back.

Remarks:
IAS files contain copies of articles from the East Hartford Gazette (Feb. 10, 1982), the East Hartford Gazette (Feb. 9, 1983), The Weekly Gazette (East Hartford, CT), Oct. 4 and Oct. 11, 1929 discussing the history and dedication of the monument. Cost of the monument was $7,000, raised by a committee and an estimated 4,800 donors, including 2,000 school children who contributed to the campaign or marched in the dedication parade. Dedication ceremonies took place on Oct. 5, 1929, the twelfth anniversary of the landing of the first troops from East Hartford in France. An estimated crowd of 8,000 attended the dedication ceremony.
