The sculpture was created by the artists at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School with students as their audience. George Woodruff, a major donor to the school, was a member of the school's Board of Trustees for 33 years and its chairman from 1940 to 1970. A bronze plaque affixed to granite marker next to sculpture reads: GEORGE WALDO WOODRUFF/1895-1987/A MAN OF QUIET STRENGTH, UNSHAKEABLE FAITH,/UNSWERVING LOYALTY, AND STEADY GENEROSITY, HE LIVED/A LIFE NOTABLE FOR THE CONSISTENCY OF ITS GOODNESS, DEDICATION, AND INTEGRITY./"GIVING TO OTHERS IS MY GREATEST PLEASURE." IAS files contain two press releases from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, one dated Sept. 23, 1992 announcing the dedication ceremony.
