Description:
Two somewhat abstract figures of a male and female, holding items symbolic of science, art and literature. The figures stand with their backs to each other and their legs extended. The female figure, wearing a mid-thigh length skirt or dress, blows on a trumpet that she holds in her proper right hand. She holds an open book in her raised proper left hand. The male figure holds a book in his lowered proper right hand and raises a triangle in his proper left hand. The sculpture is mounted on a red painted base with four arched sections which create corridors for people to walk through.

Remarks:
The sculpture cost $60,000. It was funded by Maryland's One Percent for Art program. IAS files contain an article from The Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star (Norfolk, VA), Feb. 7, 1988, pg. G10; and The Works 2 (July 1988). IAS files also contain a copy of the artist's proposal and a Jan. 12, 1988 memo from the Montgomery County Superintendent of Schools discussing the Commission for the Quince Orchard High School.
