    Description: 
    A round arched plaque on outside library wall that depicts a bas-relief bust of Henry Haven, set within a shallow circular recess. Haven appears dressed in period attire with bow tie; his head with side whiskers is turned slightly to the proper left. The circular recess is surrounded by a laurel wreath that rests on volutes.

    Remarks: 
    Henry Haven (1815-1876) was a wealthy whaling merchant, who left $65,000 in his will for charitable and benevolent purposes. His executors used to the funds to construct the public library building (completed 1892) and establish a library endowment. Augustus Saint-Gaudens sculpted the relief; the building architects were Shepley, Rutan, and Coolidge of Boston.
