VA. 1771./ATTENDED THE UNIVERSITY/OF EDINBURGH 1793./LOCATED AT DANVILLE KY. 1795/PERFORMED THE FIRST/OVARIOTOMY 1809./DIED 1830. (encircled by snake biting its tail) (On back of base:) ERECTED BY THE/KENTUCKY STATE/MEDICAL SOCIETY/1879. (East side of base:) BENEATH THIS SHAFT RESTS/EPHRAIM MCDOWELL, M. D./THE FATHER OF OVARIOTOMY/WHO BY ORIGINATING A GREAT SURGICAL/OPERATION BECAME THE BENEFACTOR OF/HIS RACE. KNOWN AND HONORED/THROUGHOUT THE CIVILIZED WORLD.
Description:
Tall obelisk on stepped base with ornate moldings. Front of obelisk carries a circular bronze plaque with a bust of the deceased in high relief. Man wears jacket, waistcoat, and tie and gazes straight forward.
