Owner:
Portland Regency, Milk Street, Portland, Maine 04101
Provenance:
Formerly located Westbrook College, Portland, Maine 04103 1983-1987.
Remarks:
Commissioned by John Payson for the Charles Shipman Payson Wing of the Portland Museum of Art. The Museum refused the gift, and the sculpture was installed at Westbrook College in 1983. It remained there until it was acquired by the Portland Regency in 1987. A second brick basin tier was added to the fountain about 1990 in an effort to discourage trash and other debris from accumulating in the basin. It was later removed. IAS files include related articles from the Portland Evening Express, July 1983, the Portland Press Herald, July 26, 1983 and Oct. 24, 1990, the Maine Times, Feb. 28, 1986 and an excerpt from the book "Maine Art Now," by Edgar Allen Beem (Gardiner, ME: Dog Ear Press, 1990).
