Description:
Carved into the trunk of a large dead pine tree is the figure of Juan Ponce de Leon who searches in vain for his fountain of youth. His face resembles the artist's because Steven Weitzman used himself as a model, viewing his reflection in a mirror taped to the tree. In the early morning light his expression appears hopeful, but as the day moves on, he appears less optimistic. The explorer is surrounded by four children peeking out from the smooth folds of the tree trunk --they represent the youth that Ponce de Leon never found.

Remarks:
The artist found the dead tree on a lawn off Le Jeune Road and had the City of Coral Gables move it to the park where is was mounted on a steel plate embedded in poured concrete. The sculpture is part of a $175,000 plan by the Ponce de Leon Development Association to transform Ponce Circle Park into a place for community activities. The City of Coral Gables paid the artist $5,670 for living expenses and authorized the Ponce de Leon Development Association to set up a trust fund to help raise the remaining $14,240 to pay for the sculpture.
The inscription on a marker located near the sculpture reads: PONCE DE LEON BY STEVEN WEITZMAN 1984/THE PONCE DE LEON DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION/GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGES CONTRIBUTIONS FROM (list of benefactors).
