    Description:
Carved into the trunk of a large dead pine tree is the figure of Juan Ponce de Leon who searches in vain for his fountain of youth. His face resembles the artist's because Steven Weitzman used himself as a model, viewing his reflection in a mirror taped to the tree. In the early morning light his expression appears hopeful, but as the day moves on, he appears less optimistic. The explorer is surrounded by four children peeking out from the smooth folds of the tree trunk --they represent the youth that Ponce de Leon never found.
