    Remarks:
Kossuth was a nineteenth-century Hungarian hero. In 1825 he entered parliament and became a leader of the movement of liberal government reform. He fled to Turkey in 1849 when Austrian and Russian forces defeated his army. Later he made a tour of the U.S. to rally support for his cause. This relief is mounted on the site of the old Hotel St. Charles, the place where Kossuth stayed when he visited Pittsburgh on January 22, 1852. The Magyars of western Pennsylvania installed this relief on the 100th anniversary of Kossuth's rebellion and exile. The Magyars are the major ethnic group in Hungary.
