Remarks:
The idea for the sculpture was conceived by Eiler Hansen, superintendent of the Pioneer Home, Alonzo Lewis, the artist and W. D. Gross, a local businessman. It was originally commissioned in 1934 by the Alaska Yukon Pioneers and Ladies of the Golden North, but work was delayed due to the Depression and World War II. Hansen raised $13,000, Gross raised $7,000 and contributions from local businesses totaled $22,600. William "Skagway Bill" Fonda was the model for the piece, originally named "The Sourdough." The sculpture was unveiled on the 82nd Alaska Day. It was cleaned by Bob Marti and Alice Hoveman in 1980. IAS files contain related articles from the Daily Sentinel, the Sitka Sentinel and the Southeastern Log (Alaska).
