    (On emblem on front of base:) VIRTUE/LIBERTY/INDEPENDENCE (On north side of base:) Pennsylvania Soldiers and Sailors home, Erie, Pennsylvania Established by Act of Assembly, approved June 3, 1885 Formally opened and dedicated February 22, 1886 This memorial erected to the memory of the dead, was unveiled May 30, 1907 (On plaque on east side of base, in raised lettering:) "SLOWLY THE SAD PROCESSION COMES./THE HEART MAY ACHE, THE HEART MUST SWELL/WITH PRICE FOR THE SOLDIERS WHO FOUGHT SO WELL./HIS BLOOD HAS BURNISHED HIS SABRE BRIGHT./TO HIS MEMORY HONOR TO HIM GOOD NIGHT" unsigned
    Description: 
    A uniformed Civil War soldier stands at ease, holding the barrel of his rifle with both hands, the stock of the rifle resting on the ground. The soldier is painted gold. The sculpture is mounted on a large square boulder adorned on the front with a emblem depicting a shield.
