A figure of a Union infantryman, dressed in a greatcoat and cap, stands at parade rest while holding a Springfield 3-band musket with both hands. The musket's butt rests near the figure's proper right foot. A canteen and a bayonet in a scabbard hang from the figure's proper left side and a cartridge box hangs from the figure's proper right rear side. The sculpture is placed atop a base with a multitiered lower section. The midsection of the base is inscribed with names of Civil War battle sites.

The monument was erected by the W. I. Brown Post, No. 31, of the Grand Army of the Republic and other members of the community at a cost of over $3,000. The monument honors those men who served in the Civil War, but since it was erected during World War I the monument was expanded to honor those who defended their nation in all wars. Hale Chadwick is credited with being a driving force behind the funding of the monument and with designing its base. The bronze soldier was supplied by Paul Cabret & Company; the granite base and shaft were built by Larson & Carlson.

The monument was dedicated on Memorial Day in 1918. At time of dedication, the square was known as Washington Square. IAS files contain articles from the Concord Evening Monitor, May 31, 1918; and the Manchester Leader and Evening Monitor, June 1, 1918. IAS files contain photocopies of handwritten minutes of the W. I. Brown, Post 31, G.A.R; and excerpt from David Ruell's typescript "The Public Sculpture of New Hampshire," Concord, New Hampshire, 1980, pg. 110-111. For additional reading see: Leonard A. Contrary to early newspaper accounts which lists media as bronze; conservator Henry Lie identifies media as copper in 1995 condition report.
