Description:
A polished granite drinking fountain for animals that consists of a tall square center section with a large circular basin around the middle. The top of the fountain features three bronze lion head spigots which once poured water into the basin from three sides, but the fountain no longer operates and the basin is now used as a planter. The bottom of the fountain features dog head spigots which once poured water into four small circular bowls, one on each side of the fountain. Two of the dog head spigots are now missing. The large circular basin was intended for horses and the four small bowls around the bottom were intended for dogs.

Remarks:
The fountain cost $1,000 and it was given to the City of Auburn by the National Humane Alliance of New York City. It was first located at Richardson Square at South and Exchange Streets in Auburn, but was later moved to the intersection of Lewis, Franklin, and Grant streets, and finally to its present site on the Pedestrian Mall. One of the two missing dog head spigots is in the City Parks office. IAS files contain an excerpt from "200 Years of History - 1793-1993,"Auburn, NY: Lakeside Printer, 1992, pg. 7.
