Remarks:
The sculpture is a copy of Thomas Crawford's statue of Freedom installed on the United States Capitol dome (IAS record 75002473). W. F. At the town meeting of 1880, $8,000 was approved for the erection of the monument. The G.A.R. launched a fund drive. The monument's construction began on Nov. 10, 1880. IAS files contain a copy of the Massachusetts Historical Commission's Form C - Monuments.
