Description:
This abstract, wind-driven, stainless steel sculpture consists of two rectangles, each 20 ft. x 5 ft. x 10 in., mounted on a horizontal axle, attached to a 2 ft. bearing assembly, attached to a 28 ft. shaft. All surfaces are burnished in swirl-like patterns, providing reflective patterns and textures. The rectangles are mounted off-center on the axle, and the short ends of the rectangles are weighted, providing various patterns of movement.

Commissioned by the Central Trust Company and the Gerald D. Hines Interests, joint owners of the Central Trust Center. PNC Financial Corporation acquired the Central Trust Company in late 1992. The PNC Center was formerly known as the Central Trust Center. The following is inscribed in a stone paving tile at the base of the sculpture: TWO RECTANGLES/VERTICAL GYRATORY/VARIATION IV/GEORGE RICKEY/(copyright symbol) 1979/CENTRAL-HINES/CINCINNATI.
IAS files contain an excerpt from Central Trust Company corporate brochure, which mentions commissioning information; the Cincinnati Enquirer, Aug. 12, 1979, which discusses the engineering of the sculpture; the Cincinnati Enquirer, Sept. 16, 1979, which discusses the dedication, and an excerpt from "A Guide to Public Art in Downtown Cincinnati," pg. 5, by Elizabeth Scheurer.
