Owned by Murphy, James & Gail, Box 315, Emigrant, Montana 59027
Located Our Lady of Lourdes Roadside Grotto, Off Highway 29, Emigrant, Montana
Provenance:
Formerly located St. Joseph's Hospital, Lewiston, Montana ca. 1910-1974.
Remarks:
Grotto was built under the direction of the Catholic Daughters of America and Lorraine Schmidt in fulfillment of a promise made by Mrs. Schmidt to the Virgin Mary. The actual construction was done by couples from Livingston, Pine Creek and Billings, Montana. The land was donated by Mr. & Mrs. James Murphy, and the plexiglass canopy is a gift of Mr. & Mrs. George Indendi. The figures of Mary and St. Bernadette are gifts of the Daughters of Jesus and previously stood at St. Joseph Hospital in Lewiston, Montana. The Virgin figure was struck by lightning in 1982, severely damaging her proper left arm. The placement of the flowers conceals the damage. IAS files include related articles and information.
