    Description: 
    Monumental environmental sculpture created in an old rock quarry. The bluestone installation includes walls, terraces, hidden passageways and ramps built using dry key construction with large key stones placed at intervals throughout the walls and ramps, supported and held in place by smaller surrounding stones. Rising up from the center of the installation is a monolithic abstract sculpture.

    Remarks: 
    Several individual sculptures are sited in and around the installation. Individual sculptures include: "Prayer" (1943), "Tomorrow," "Quarry Family," "Flame," and "The Brother". The quarry was purchased by the artist in 1938. The earthwork, "Opus 40," was begun in 1939 and was an ongoing project until Fite's death in 1976. IAS files contain copies of related brochures: "Harvey Fite's Opus 40"; and "Opus 40: an environmental sculpture by Harvey Fite". IAS files contain copies of related articles from Hudson Valley, July 1985, pg. 38-39; Woodstock Times, April 16, 1992, pg. 26; and Albany (NY) Times Union, Sept. 4, 1988. IAS files contain copy of related Jan. 17, 1992 conservation technology study by Martin E. Weaver with Barry Burton (The Center for Preservation Research, Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Columbia University, New York, NY).
