    Description: 
    Two full-length Civil War soldiers, one a flag bearer and the other an infantryman. Both soldiers wear military uniforms including caps. The soldier on the proper right is the flag bearer. He holds a flag and flagpole with his proper left hand, and reaches with his proper right hand for the handle of his sword which hangs on his proper left side. The soldier on the proper left is the infantryman. He leans forward with his proper left leg placed forward as if walking. He holds a rifle with fixed bayonet in his proper right hand. The bronze figures share a single bronze base which stands atop a tall granite shaft. The granite base features two bronze tablets, one commemorating the 148 veterans who served in the Civil War from Hillsdale and nearby areas; and the other depicting the battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac.

    The monument was funded through a $10,000 bequest left to the town by local war veteran John K. Cullin. IAS files contain copies of related articles from Hillsdale Harbinger, Jan. 7 and July 4, 1916. IAS files contain copy of monument specifications and contract between the Cullin's estate and Jones Brothers Company. IAS files contain copy of dedication ceremony poem. IAS files contain related articles from Register- Star (Hudson Valley Newspapers), June 21, 2000 and Aug. 13, 2000; and from The Independent, Aug. 14, 2000, discussing the 2000 restoration and rededication of the memorial.
