Full-length cast bronze figure of a Chippewa brave standing barechested, his hair in two braids falling over the front of his shoulders. He wears breeches with an ankle-length shawl draped around his waist and over his proper left shoulder and arm. His proper left arm is bent at the waist with a peace pipe crooked, his proper right arm bent and the hand open and extended. The sculpture is mounted upon a square base.

Sculpture was paid for by the federal government, erected under the terms of a bill introduced by Congressman Conrad G. Selvig of Crookston. In 1863, near the site, the chiefs of the Pembina and Red Lake tribes signed the Old Crossing Treating, ceding about three million acres of Chippewa land in North West Minnesota and Northeast North Dakota.
