    Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned by the Old St. Joseph Neighborhood Preservation Association at a cost of $20,000. It was funded by private donations, and completed with the assistance of the Krasl Art Center (St. Joseph). The sculpture recognizes the vital function of wildlife trapping and trading to the establishment of the region; the black bear was once native to the area. The artist completed the work while in residence at the Krasl Art Center. The neighborhood was established a state historic district in 1981. Plaque in front of the sculpture reads: JOSEPHINE AND HER CUBS/by/Elke Kramer/1989/OLD ST. JOSEPH NEIGHBORHOOD/PRESERVATION ASSOCIATION.
