Remarks:
The idea for the monument originated with the Ellis County Historical Society as part of the restoration of Old Hays City. The organization approved approximately $12,500 to cover the cost of landscaping, the sculpture and a marker. The renovated cemetery was dedicated during a special ceremony May 5, 1973. The survey reports that the figure was carved from Kansas limestone, but June 8, 1972 newsclipping from the Hays Daily News (Kansas) states it was Indiana limestone. IAS files contain copies of articles from the Hays Daily News (Kansas) June 8, 1972; July 12, 1972; Aug. 8, 1972; Dec. 29, 1972; Feb. 11, 1973; and April 8, 1973.
