    Description: 
    Giles Waldo Shurtleff stands dressed in a colonel's uniform. He wears a double-breasted jacket with large round buttons. A sword sheath and tassel hang at his proper left side from a wide belt. His head is turned to his proper right and he is looking off into the distance. His proper right arm is fully extended and he is pointing with his index finger. His proper left hand is clutching a scroll. He appears to be addressing a crowd. The sculpture is mounted atop a short base atop a rough-hewn block.

    Remarks: 
    The sculpture honors Brigadier-General Giles Waldo Shurtleff (1831-1904), born in Quebec, Canada, who organized the first regiment of African-American troops in Ohio during the Civil War. After the war he taught Latin at Oberlin College. The artist donated the plaster cast of the sculpture to Oberlin College. The artist intended to create an allegorical sculpture grouping of two figures to commemorate the participation of African-American soldiers in the Civil War. The second figure was to be an African-American man kneeling in a cotton field, spilling his cotton basket to reach for a rifle the General was handing him. The artist moved from Oberlin before finding a suitable model for the second figure. General Shurtleff modelled for the sculpture in 1898. The plaster cast of the sculpture was exhibited at Spear Library, Oberlin College during 1898.
    The Shurtleff family had the sculpture cast in bronze in 1911 and Mrs. Shurtleff donated it to the College. A dedication ceremony was held at the College on Memorial Day, 1911.
