Description:
Figure of a bearded Confederate soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a uniform which includes a waist-length jacket, a brimmed hat, and a bedroll draped over one shoulder. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt of the rifle rests in front of his proper left foot. His proper left leg is supported in back by a tree stump. The soldier and plinth rest on a small granite boulder atop the base. The tiered granite base has a an olive wreath relief on the front and inscriptions on all four sides.

Remarks:
The statue was ordered from Italy. The firm of Morris Brothers Marble Works erected the monument at a cost of $5,000 for the Mollie Moore Davis Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. The statue was ordered from Italy and was erected to honor the Confederate dead of Smith County, as well as the 231 soldiers who died of various illnesses while training in Tyler. Originally, Oakwood Cemetery was called Lollar's Cemetery, then City Cemetery. In 1903, it was renamed Oakwood Cemetery.
