    Remarks: 
    General John S. Griffith (1829-1901) served in the Confederate army as Brigadier General of the Texas State Troops. He was later elected to the state legislature. IAS files include a brief biographical passage of the sitter from "Handbook of Texas," vol. 1, edited by Walter Prescott Webb, (Austin: Texas State Historical Association, 1952).
