Full-length figure of John Summerfield Griffith stands atop a rectangular tiered base. The figure is bearded, wears a suit, and holds a hat in his proper left hand. His proper right hand is in his pocket.

Remarks:
General John S. Griffith (1829-1901) served in the Confederate army as Brigadier General of the Texas State Troops. He was later elected to the state legislature. IAS files include a brief biographical passage of the sitter from "Handbook of Texas," vol. 1, edited by Walter Prescott Webb, (Austin: Texas State Historical Association, 1952).
