Description:
A large oval boulder carved with Celtic interlace and symbolic reliefs commemorating the lives of David Wolcott Kendall and his wife Delle Colby Kendall. On one side is a small circular relief depicting a ship crossing the Atlantic, a reference to the Kendalls trip to the West Indies in March 1897 during which the rough waters are believed to have lead to Delle Colby Kendall's death two years later. Below this is a rectangular relief of the Mayflower followed by a listing of David Wolcott Kendall's Mayflower descendants. On the other side is a circular relief depicting the insignia of the Sons of the Revolution. Around the top of the boulder are a dove, a lion, and a Celtic cross, symbols of the Christian faith. Also carved at the top is a square relief depicting the elk head insignia of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. Four small circular reliefs run down one side of the boulder, two of which are filled in with insignia for the Masonic Order and for the Ladies Literary Club, and two of which are left blank.

Remarks:
The sculpture was designed by David W. Kendall for the grave of his wife, Delle Colby Kendall (1852-1899). David Kendall came to Grand Rapids in 1879 as a designer for the Phoenix Furniture Company, and later his second wife, Helen M. Kendall, endowed the Kendall School of Design as a memorial to her husband.
