    Description: 
    Full-length figure of James Edward Shepard stands on a square base and low, tiered granite and brick platform. The figure wears a three-piece suit and tie and holds a book in his proper right hand. His proper left thumb is in his trouser pocket. A Masonic symbol appears below the inscription on the base.

    Remarks: 
    Commissioned by the James E. Shepard Memorial Foundation Inc. and the Prince Hall Grand Lodge F. & A. M. of North Carolina in memory of James Edward Shepard (1875-1947), founder and president of North Carolina College at Durham, now North Carolina Central University. The sculpture was cleaned and given a coat of paint ca. 1991. IAS files include a copy of the dedication program.
