    Description: 
    Full-length figure of Rev. Gordon Battelle stands atop a tall pedestal. He wears civilian clothes of the Civil War period and holds a book to his chest in his proper right hand. The figure faces south. On three sides of the pedestal are incised 265 names of Newport Township citizens who served in the Civil War and previous American wars.

    Remarks: 
    Erected by the Grand Army of the Republic, Newport Post No. 489 and Col. J. H. Battelle in memory of Rev. Gordon Battelle (1814-1862), a chaplain with the 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry. The cost was $2,000. Col. Battelle, son of Rev. Battelle, was the primary fundraiser. IAS files include related articles from the Marietta Times, July 8, 1913 and July 14, 1974 and a citation to the book, "Washington County, Ohio to 1980," [Newport, OH]: Washington County Historical Society, pg. 34.
