    Remarks:
Monument commemorates Simon Bolivar (1783-1830), known as "El Libertor," or "The Liberator," the revolutionary South American general famed for his role in liberating several South American nations from Spanish rule in the 19th century. The monument was a gift of Venezuela to the citizens of Bolivar, Missouri, in recognition of their naming their city after General Bolivar. It was erected through the Simon Bolivar Memorial Foundation, and dedicated on July 5, 1948, the 137th anniversary of the establishment of Venezuelan independence. The monument was dedicated jointly by United States President Harry S. Truman (a native Missourian), and Venezuelan President Romulo Gallegos, during a three-day Pan American Festival in Bolivar. The sculpture was made in Milan, Italy; the base was fabricated in Venezuela.
