Remarks:
The memorial was presented by the Stuyvesant Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was erected by the New York City Department of Parks in a landscaped triangular park southeast of Union Square. The memorial was removed from the Union Square area in the mid-1990s when the park was enlarged and redesigned. The memorial was later installed on the grounds of the Veterans Hospital at the New York Harbor Health Care System (Manhattan Campus) at 423 East 23rd Street. According the 1941 New York City Department of Parks checklist, the sculptor of the memorial is Wilhelm Hunt Diederich. An article from the New York Times, June 22, 2001, indicates that the memorial was designed by Wilhelm Hunt Diederich. However, according to an article from the New York Times, Nov. 2, 1934, the sculptor of the memorial was Frederick Roth. Frederick Roth's New York Times obituary, May 22, 1944, also indicates that he is the sculptor of the memorial.
