Inscription:  (On left side of base:) TACCA signed Description:  A realistically modeled sculpture of a wild boar. At the base are plants and animals including frogs, field mice, crabs, lizards, and a snake eating a mouse. Subject:  Animal -- Pig Object Type:  Outdoor Sculpture -- New York -- New York Sculpture Owner:  Administered by City of New York, Department of Parks and Recreation, The Arsenal - Central Park, New York, New York 10021 Located 57th Street at Sutton Place, New York, New York Remarks:  This piece is a replica of the bronze sculpture created in 1634 by Renaissance sculptor Pietro Tacca which adorns a fountain in the Mercato Nuovo in Florence, Italy. Tacca's boar sculpture was modeled after an antique marble boar known as "Porcellino" in the collection of the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Tacca designed a different bottom part though, one which was covered with plants and animals. According to Tacca's biographer, the sculptor was very precise and even studied a recently killed boar to make sure every detail was accurate. The sculpture was a gift of Hugh Trumbull Adams through Salute to the Seasons Fund for a Better New York. A. Ottavino Corporation created the granite base.
