    Description: 
    Over the entrance to the building is a carved concrete lintel with optical fiber elements. Relief images carved into the lintel include the stars and stripes, Native-American petroglyphs, an eagle's wing, Liberty's crown, and a sunrise symbol. The sculpture is lit by night with a program of changing colors and forms, which take several days to be seen completely.

    A nearby plaque reads: AMERICAN SUNRISE/1990/CONCRETE & OPTICAL FIBERS/CLYDE LYNDS/COMMISSIONED UNDER THE PUBLIC BUILDING ARTS INCLUSION ACT/OF 1978/NEW JERSEY STATE COUNCIL ON THE ARTS/DEPARTMENT OF STATE. The sculpture was intended as a welcoming sign. The sculpture cost $69,200. IAS files contain a copy of the proposal for the sculpture submitted by the artist in April 1989; an article from the New York Times, Aug. 12, 1990; and a pamphlet entitled "American Sunrise Emeritus, 1989-1992."
