Remarks:
Bird W. Spencer was president of the New Jersey Firemens' Association, 1878-1920. He was appointed chairman of the commission which chose the Lathrop estate as the site for the New Jersey State Firemen's Home, a home for elderly and disabled firemen. IAS files contain a related article from Boonton Weekly Bulletin (Boonton, NJ), Aug. 26, 1920, which discusses the unveiling ceremony.
