    Description: 
    Upright stone stele containing an inset bronze panel depicting a female warrior in low relief. Figure wears close-fitting helmet with eagle on top, Classical robes and cape, and clasps a shield with the proper left hand. Shield tip rests on ground adjacent to proper left foot. In proper right hand, warrior holds sprigs of laurel against her breast; she gazes ahead with a solemn expression on her face.

    Remarks: 
    Monument was relocated in 1973; it was moved from a median strip at Market and Thirteenth Streets to the New Hanover High School grounds. The monument was funded by contributions collected by students and the local Chamber of Commerce in Wilmington and New Hanover County. IAS files contain newsclipping from Wilmington Star News (NC), Nov. 11, 1984, which includes photograph of sculpture in its original site at 13th & Market street in 1922.
