    Remarks:
One of twelve similar monuments erected in each of the 12 states through which the National Old Trails Road (U.S. Route 40) passes. The sculpture commemorates pioneer women and was erected by the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The idea for such a tribute originated in 1916; and a DAR committee was formed in 1922 under Mrs. John Trigg Moss (St. Louis, MO). She and her son came up with the design for the statue, inspired by the Indian guide Sacajawea. August Leimbach created and cast the sculpture. The sculpture in Springfield was the first to be installed and was originally located on the ten-acre park surrounding the Ohio Masonic Home. The sculpture was moved to Snyder Park in 1956 to make way for the expansion of U. S. Route 40. On Sept. 22, 2011 the sculpture was moved to a new green space known as the National Road Commons. IAS image files show the sculpture located at Snyder Park. IAS files contain fact sheet from the NSDAR, excerpts from a booklet about the Madonna of the Trail monuments.
