Description:
Standing figure of an old sea captain wears a hat, sweater, vest, rolled up blue jeans and boots. He has a white moustache and beard and a red parrot sits on his proper right shoulder.

Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of Wayman, Stanley, 1444 Allen Street, Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina 29464 1990-1993.
Remarks:
Sculpture was carved from an oak tree which fell on the home of the artist during Hurricane Hugo, Sept. 21, 1989. It was completed and raised in the yard on April 1, 1990. In July 1993, the artist donated the sculpture to the Museum on the Common, where he is the head of the Artist-in-Residence program. The sculpture was painted in Fall 1993 by children aged 4 to 12 who participated in a "Paint Captain Hugo" contest. IAS files include related articles from East Cooper Magazine, Nov. 1993, the Post and Courier Jan. 4, 1990 and an unpublished story by Scott Stanley, son of the artist, about Captain Hugo's history.
