    Remarks:
Martin Marty O.S.B., Pioneer Bishop/Defende Nos./Apostle of the Sioux Indians 1834-1896, was erected by the Knights of Columbus, Marty Council, of Yankton, in 1919. He was born in 1834 in Switzerland, and was the first abbot of St. Meinrad's Abbey in Indiana. He arrived in Yankton in 1876 in response to a call for missionaries to the Native American communities. He opened a school for Native American boys, and convinced the Benedictine Sisters who had come from Switzerland to Missouri, to come to Yankton and open a girls' school. He was given the Indian name "Blackrobe Lean Chief." Later he became the first bishop of the Sioux Falls Diocese. The sculpture originally stood at the Sacred Heart Convent in Yankton. A replica stands at Bede Hall on the campus of Mt. Marty College. For additional information see: "The Black Robe Lean Chief," by Robert Karolevitz.
