MORTON/BORN IN PORTSMOUTH NH FEBRUARY 9 1814/DIED IN ROLLINSFORD NH JUNE 4 1904 (On each side of base: list of names and unit numbers of Civil War soldiers from Rollinsford) Founder's mark appears.
    Description: 
    A figure of a Civil War soldier loading his rifle stands atop a tall granite monument. The mustached soldier is dressed in an Union Army uniform consisting of boots, leggings, pants, jacket, cape, and a cap. With his proper left hand he holds the barrel of his musket. The butt of the musket rests by his proper left foot. With his proper right hand he reaches into one of the two pouches hanging from his belt on his proper right side. A bayonet hangs from his belt on his proper left side. A large pouch hangs from a strap over his proper right shoulder and a canteen hangs from a strap over his proper left shoulder. He stands with his proper right foot forward slightly. The monument beneath the figure is adorned with reliefs of crossed rifles on the front, crossed sabers on the right side, crossed cannons on the left side, and crossed American flags on the rear.

    Remarks: 
    The monument was erected with funds provided by the estate of William H. Morton, former town clerk and treasurer. The monument is dedicated to the men from Rollinsford who served in the Civil War. IAS files contain a transcription of names inscribed on the base.
