Inscription:  Gorham Company, Providence, Rhode Island (On front of base, on insignia of the Spanish War Veterans:) CUBA/PHILIPPINES/PUERTO RICO/U.S. VOLUNTEERS (On plaque on back of base:) THIS MONUMENT, ERECTED BY THE CITY OF FITCHBURG, IS TO COMMEMORATE THE VALOR AND PATRIOTISM OF THE MEN WHO SERVED IN THE WAR WITH SPAIN, THE PHILIPPINE INSURRECTION, AND THE CHINA EXPEDITION 1898-1902. (On plaques, left and right sides of base:) MEN OF FITCHBURG/WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY DURING/THE SPANISH AMERICAN WAR 1898-1902 (list of names from sixth Mass. Infantry Company D on left plaque and Company B on the right plaque) unsigned Founder's mark appears. Description:  A standing figure of a Spanish American War soldier holding his rifle horizontally in front of him. The sculpture rests on a square base in the middle of a traffic island.
