    Description:
Decorative elements on the Monterey County Courthouse include high reliefs of 61 heads of individuals from the County's history, American Indians and settlers, five bas-relief scenes within a row of pillars at the building's west entrance which depict five eras in County history, an allegorical figure of Justice and twenty small figurative bronze reliefs which are installed on sets of double doors. The Indian era contains a central brave with a bow and arrow and other figures in hunting and domestic scenes. The Coming of the Spaniards depicts a central equestrian figure of Don Gaspar de Portola and other equestrian figures. The ships in this panel include those belonging Cabrillo and Vizcaino and Spanish dragoons.
The Modern Era has a sports theme and contains a central tennis player accompanied by a swimmer, angler, hunter, football player and golfer. There is also a polo player and a rodeo rider. The Coming of the White Man contains an equestrian figure of a trapper with a rifle, a train, wagon and Yankee Clipper ships. The Missions Era includes a central figure of a Franciscan friar, grain reapers and allusions to the Missions of San Carlos and San Antonio. The allegorical figure of Justice is a female relief over the entrance. She has knee-length hair and wears a form-fitting, draped garment. She holds a sword aloft in her proper right hand. Her proper left hand is raised behind her bowed head at about shoulder level. She is walking toward her proper right.
The fountain in the garden consists of a fluted column topped with carved bulls' heads which support a elaborate four-sided, intersecting arched form. Decorative elements on this form include figurative reliefs and other decorative elements.
