    (On plaque behind sculpture:) "REX"/Rex, a cast-zinc Labrador retriever, was cast/in Batavia, New York in 1884. He stood guard/at a mansion in Geneva, Ohio until the 1930s/when he was purchased by Monroe Steel Castings/Company and moved to Monroe. For nearly 40/years the sturdy Lab greeted school children and/the community at his sentry post on the corner/of South Roessler and West Front Streets. Broken/into pieces by vandals in 1973, Rex was donated/to Monroe County Community College in 1974 and/completely restored by Professor Howard A./Johnson and his students. Placed in the MCCC/courtyard in 1990, Rex has a new post, greeting/students and the community once again./Rex was restored through the hard work and dedication of:/Craig E.     Remarks: 
    The sculpture was originally cast in 1884 in Batavia, New York. It stood at a private residence in Geneva, Ohio until the 1930s when it was purchased by the Monroe Steel Castings Company and installed there. In 1973 it was broken by vandals with sledgehammers. It was given to Monroe County Community College in 1974 where it was restored by Professor Howard A. Johnson and his students in 1990. Another cast was made from the broken parts in 1980 by Herman Halfield, a retired steelworker, and installed at Fire Station #3 in Monroe (see IAS record MI000639).
