The work is inscribed with: The Cat was taken from the farm to Salem on board of the Cleopatra's Barge & made the voyage to the Mediterranean, was a pet of the Captain Ben Crowninshield & was lost on the voyage 1817. In Memory of Pompey who became a Victim of his Patriotism in 1817.
