The painting was given by Minnie Hauk, an opera singer living in Lucerne, Switzerland, to Dr. Meyer's mother, Mrs. Kuno Meyer Luescher, a friend who used to read to her. Minnie Hauk acquired the painting from Albert Bierstadt who painted it for her. Minnie Hauk talks about her acquaintance with Albert Bierstadt in her memoirs, "Memories of a Singer," by Minnie Hauk [Baroness De Wartegg] collated by Captain E. B. Hitchcock, London: A.M. Philpot, Ltd., 1925, pg. 283.
